| A Jazz Thing has been around for a few years now. However, it's a brand new band since David Prescott relocated to Santa Rosa from the San Diego area.
David has been playing music for nearly forty years and has performed playing trombone, bass, guitar, drums, trumpet, piano, and vocals. A graduate of California State University at Long Beach, David received a BA in music performance in 1982. Up until that time David had focused primarily on trombone. However, shortly after graduation he discovered that he could meet more girls playing bass in a rock band than playing trombone in any band and hung up the trombone for the next twenty plus years.
During this time David concentrated on playing bass with a variety of original rock and alternative bands coming close to fame on several occasions. During the 80's David played with Jay Gordon of Orgy for a number of years. David and Jay wrote many songs together and while David eventually moved to the east coast for a couple of years, Jay's band Orgy was signed to Korn's record label. When David returned to the Bay Area he was asked to audition for Metallica after Cliff Burton passed away.
The next step for David was to move to the Los Angeles area where he auditioned for Ozzy Osbourne. Shortly after this time he became frustrated with the music industry and dropped out of the scene entirely.
Although David stopped pursuing his music career, it never left his blood. Eventually he moved to Arizona and after several years and the advent of hard disk recording he decided to start writing again. He worked with a few other musicians in the area and wrote and recorded a number of alternative rock songs. Knowing that Arizona was a tough market he eventually moved back to southern California, specifically the San Diego area. Within a week he was playing with the band Twerp and was signed to a small record deal. Twerp was an alternative rock band fronted by former Nine Inch Nails guitarist Jonathan Liber. The band was short lived as there was some serious personality conflicts in the band and Jonathan was asked to leave. He was replaced by Andrea Bethard on vocals and an entirely new CD was written, recorded and produced by David. The new band was call Junk and they had moderate success in southern California.
David continued writing and recording and had success on garageband.com with a few alternative instrumental charts. After becoming frustrated with trying to "make it" playing original rock music, he decided to join an "All Star" cover band called Phenomenon. Phenomenon was made up of some of the best rock musicians in the area and fronted by Perry McCarty from Warrior and the Steve Stevens and the Atomic Playboys. (Steve Stevens from Billy Idol's band). As cover bands go they had very good success and enjoyed pla ying to full house after full house.
Finally, about two years ago David purchased a new trombone. After twenty plus years he wasn't sure if he could play anymore but, to his surprise he could. Within a few weeks of playing he started sitting in with a quartet which eventually became 'A Jazz Thing'. Over the next year he became one of the most sought after trombone players in San Diego county playing with countless groups and bands. During this time he played with several jazz combos, symphonic bands, big bands and orchestras.
Prior to moving to the Bay Area David was playing trombone with the following:
- A Jazz Thing - his own quintet
- Tepesco - his own latin jazz quintet with David Hilton on bass (Suma Cum Laude. Berklee School of Music graduate, and Peter Sprague bandmate) and Chris Montgomery Joe Pass protege.
- Coastal Communities Concert Band - one of the top wind ensembles in the country. Scheduled to perform at the Sydney Opera House in Australia in 2008
- North County Symphony
- Rack of Bones - All trombone group which regularly performed at the NAMM center in Carlsbad, CA
- Big Band Express - Top notch big band featuring former players from Stan Kenton and Woody Herman's big bands
- Mira Costa Latin Jazz Orchestra - David was a featured player with the group
Since moving to Santa Rosa, David has been playing with several groups and is still learning his way around the music scene. He's currently playing with the 7 Deadly Zins and sits in with several other groups including Orjazzum, and the Santa Rosa JC Jazz Band.
